Crews renovated all four corners and upgraded critical traffic signal infrastructure while keeping the Mesa intersection operational for drivers.
Roadway Electric reached a major milestone on the Ray Road Extension at Ellsworth project in Mesa, Ariz., completing a full renovation of all four corners of the existing intersection while maintaining traffic signal operations for the traveling public.
“Alongside our partners with Salt River Project and the City of Mesa, our team executed the conversion to the new intersection configuration through careful planning and coordination,” Roadway Electric Project Manager Loren Hale says. “This milestone reflects the commitment, expertise and collaboration our crews bring to delivering critical infrastructure improvements for the community.”
What did Roadway Electric complete at Ray Road and Ellsworth?
The September milestone followed months of planning and preparation by the Roadway Electric team.
Crews completed improvements across all four corners of the existing intersection and upgraded critical electrical and traffic signal infrastructure. The work culminated in the conversion to the new intersection configuration.
The scope required crews to coordinate multiple construction phases around an active signal system while maintaining safe access through the intersection.
How did crews keep the intersection operational during construction?
Keeping the signalized intersection operational was one of the project’s biggest challenges.
Rather than shutting down the existing system while crews performed the upgrades, Roadway Electric developed a phased approach that allowed the team to complete the work while continuing to serve drivers using the intersection.
That required detailed sequencing, close coordination and careful preparation before crews could make the final conversion.
Why does the Ray Road Extension milestone matter?
Traffic signal systems play a critical role in keeping people moving safely through active transportation corridors. Upgrading that infrastructure becomes more complex when construction must proceed without taking the existing intersection out of service.
The accomplishment demonstrates Roadway Electric’s ability to deliver complex electrical and traffic signal infrastructure through careful planning, technical expertise and collaboration with its public and utility partners.
